Camp David Lake Wenatchee Vacation Cabin Near Leavenworth Wa

At the end of January, we rented “Camp David,” a 2-bedroom, 1-bathroom vacation cabin in the Chiwawa River Pines area, which is a  few miles from Lake Wenatchee State Park and Fish Lake.  It’s also about a 20-30 minute drive from Leavenworth, a great little tourist town on the eastern side of Washington State’s Cascade Mountains (about three hours from Seattle).

With it’s Bavarian theme, not many would call Leavenworth classy or upscale, but it’s fun.  In the winter, when we were there, we saw places you could do sleigh rides, and of course there is snowshoeing and cross-country skiing all around town (though not many dog-friendly trails right near town).

Anyway, back to the vacation cabin.

We came over from Spokane for the weekend and met family who were driving out from Seattle.  The weather was pretty bad (parts of Washington had more snow dumped this year than in the last ten years) and the passes were closed off and on, so we almost didn’t make it for our snowshoeing weekend.  Had a little trouble finding the cabin too since the road sign for the street it was on was buried in the snow!  And when arriving to the cabin, all the snow had fallen off the roof, burying the recently shoveled path to the door.  So, the snow made getting there a bit of a chore, but when we called for help finding the place, the owners (who live in Seattle) answered and did their best to direct me.  Very pleased with their prompt response to my message and their willingness to help.

Anyway, eventually found the cabin, and it was a great little place.  The hot tub out back was wonderful (I tried that baby the first night), especially with the temperatures in the 20s and mounds of snow all around.  It made the cabin feel very private and secluded even though there were other homes on the road.  You could probably go in the nude if you like that swinging free feeling!

Inside, the cabin wasn’t huge, but it was fine for accomodating about four people (six would be possible if you want to pull out the couch and you sleep 2 per bed on each bed).  The stairs leading up to the loft are quite steep, so that area is probably best for the kids or spry adults.  The small but efficient kitchen had everything you could want, and there was even a full-sized washer and dryer next to the bathroom with plenty of extra towels stacked overhead.

One thing to warn you about is that this is a big time snowmobiling area with lots of trails accessible right from the neighborhood streets.  When we arrived on Thursday, we didn’t hear much of it, but by Saturday there were people cruising down the streets and Saturday night there was a little outdoor gathering with some drinking down the street.  If you enjoy snowmobiling, you’ll doubtlessly love it here, but if you find these things little more than noise machines, you may find the weekends a bit loud (especially during the day) in this neighborhood.

We weren’t too bothered by the snowmobiles, since we spent our days visiting Leavenworth (there are plenty of restaurants, tourist shops, and wineries with inexpensive tastings in town, all within a radius of a few blocks) and snowshoeing around the Lake Wenatchee area.  There was a very beautiful snowshoeing trailing that ran along a river and out to the shore of the lake before curling back up into the trees.  A lovely and quiet bit of nature (we hardly saw anyone else until we were leaving–a few more folks were showing up to take advantage of the trail we had already broken for them, hah), and it made me want to come check out this area again in the summer, so you could try some hikes.

We also visited Plain, a tiny town (don’t blink or you’ll miss it) that you can drive through if you take the back way to Leavenworth (ended up taking this way to originally get to the cabin, since Steven’s Pass was closed and cars were backed up past where you needed to turn off).  If you drive through Plain, visit Plain Hardware.  This funky little shop does indeed sell hardware, but it also sells ski and snowshoe gear, dog paraphenilia, tourist necessities, and espressos that no Seattle native will sneer at.  The grocery store next door was less impressive with a smaller selection than most of the 7-11s back home.  Hope those folks in Plain know how to order groceries over the Internet.

Overall, our weekend was fun, andhave no problem recommending Camp David for anyone wanting to explore the Lake Wenatchee, Leavenworth Wa areas.  The folks that own that cabin have several in the area, and you can check them out at Comfy Cabins.

Lake Coeur Dalene Vacation Rental in Harrison Idaho Awesome Bicycle Vacation

My family came out to the north Idaho area the last week in June this year, and we all headed over to Lake Coeur d’Alene for some rest, relaxation, and exercise. I knew the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes (a paved, 72-mile long bike path) ran through the town of Harrison (population 267) at the southern end of the lake, so I suggested a cabin rental there.

There were quite a few pricey rentals in the area (running in the neighborhood of $2,000 a week), but we found a small cabin (many decades old) right on the waterfront with the trail running between the yard and the dock. It was only $600 a week, so it was a great deal, and unlike many cabins in the area, the yard allowed you to walk right down to the trail and the lake without navigating a series of steep stairs (a lot of the houses on the lake are built into the cliffs and high hills of the area). Our cabin was about 5 miles south of Harrison, which you can easily bike into on the trail (there are roads for you automobile types too).

The Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes as it follows ...

River Photo - Courtesy of Wikipedia

This was a very quiet area. We saw many deer while we were out here (some right along the dirt drive that leads to the cabin) as well as a raccoon and a wild turkey. (We might have seen more wildlife, but we had the dogs along–it is a dog friendly rental, and they even have a lead and stake in the backyard, if you want to put your pups outside without worrying about them running away.) There were many birds making their homes on and around the lake (not far from the cabin, a family of ospreys has a nest on a piling). While walking one day, we spotted turtles basking on a sun-drenched log in a wetlands area. So, this was a wonderful place to enjoy wildlife. It was extremely quiet too. As I mentioned, Harrison is a small town, and many of the cabins along the lake are people’s second homes, so they were unoccupied. The bicycle trail did see use everyday, but during the week (especially in the evenings), you could be out for an hour and only pass a couple other people.

Our cabin itself was certainly on the rustic side (don’t expect a DVD player, stereo, wireless internet, or even a phone) with older appliances (though there was a new microwave) and a creative bathroom arrangement. The toilet and sink were in one little spot off the kitchen and the shower was in its own closet type enclosure (also off the kitchen). As long as you’re with family, it’s not a big deal, but you might not want to be showering while people you don’t know very well are making breakfast outside the curtain.

The cabin had a family room, a kitchen, and a porch that has been closed in. The family room sported a twin bed and a couch, while the porch/bedroom had a double, a twin, and another couch. All-in-all you can sleep 5 or 6. The cabin is a pretty tight fit for that many though. But as long as the weather is nice, you’ll be wanting to spend a lot of the time outside.

The enclosed porch was actually a neat place to sleep. It’s raised, as the lot slopes down toward the water, and there are big windows all across the front and one of the sides, so when you look out from the bed, it’s almost as if you’re sleeping in a treehouse, because you’re looking at the branches.

The town of Harrison itself is pretty small. It’s one of those places that was booming back in the logging-of-Lake-Coeur-d’Alene heyday with a half dozen saloons and lots of bawdy forms of entertainment. Now there are a couple hundred residents, a tiny store (slightly larger selection than a 7-11), a bicycle rental shop, a park with benches, an RV park on the water, and a marina where you can rent kayaks and motorboats. There is a restaurant and a couple other shops, but this definitely isn’t the place to stay if city nightlife are must-haves for you.

The big draw is the lake and the trail. You can bicycle, skate, walk or jog (no motor vehicles), and do any sort of water recreation you can think of. We really enjoyed being able to skate and bicycle right out of our yard. If you don’t have your own bicycles, you can rent them from the Pedal Pushers shop in town (my mother and I tried the three-wheeled recumbent “trikes.” The seats were super comfortable, and if I knew where I’d store it back home, I’d buy one.

The only thing missing from our cabin was a grill for outdoor BBQs. If you rent this place, you may want to bring a portable grill along for your hot dogs and hamburgers (of course, there is a fire pit area down by the water in case you want to do it the old fashioned way).

All-in-all, I recommend the location and the cabin for a peaceful vacation with plenty of outdoors things to do.

Comfort Texas Meyer Bed Breakfast

Our aunt, uncle, cousin and their children were coming from Maryland for a visit the first week in April, 2007. We wanted to take them to the Texas hill country for a few days and show them the wild flowers and others places of interest. We have spent many weekends in the hill country, in towns like Wimberley, Blanco, Kerrville, Fredericksburg, Leakey, etc. and prefer to spend our nights there in bed and breakfasts, private cabins or guesthouses. We have been looking to buy some property in the hill country for some years now….and have recently purchased some land outside of Fredericksburg, with the intention of building a house and moving there in a year or so.

Shops at Wimberley, Texas.

However, despite all of our times in the hill country, we didn’t know where to take the relatives to stay. We called some friends who had moved a couple of years ago to the Camp Verde area and they suggested Meyers Bed and Breakfast, in Comfort. Their recommendation was not based on personal experience or rumor, but merely on something they’d seen in the local paper. Looked up the Meyers website, but wasn’t that impressed, since the photos and information on websites rarely reveal what the place is really like. We took a chance and called them,….and reserved two rooms for two consecutive nights.

We arrived at Meyers and checked in and were quite impressed. It is located in small complex of historical buildings and a few recently-built rooms constructed to look old on the creek on a quiet street in Comfort, bordered by a rustic cedar fence. Our building had a beautiful stone facade and the rooms were clean and modern, decorated tastefully with western motif wrought iron fixtures. Our bed was very comfortable, which was a relief to my wife, who has had back problems for years. The children enjoyed the pool and admired the morning doves in an outdoor cage with young ones in a nest. There is an outdoor covered area with hammocks and ceiling fans, with tables for playing dominoes or cards. Behind the complex, you can walk for some distance along the creek, bordered by huge cypress trees. The next day, someone noticed a hawk flying around the area and we observed it landing on a nest high up in a cypress tree near the creek. Thanks to my digital camera with a zoom, I was able to photograph the hawk sitting on a nest of young ones. Within a short walking distance are several antique shops, a florist, and a cowboy bar, with outside tables.

The next morning, a full breakfast was served in a room with windows overlooking the creek.

While we ate, we watched several deer, with fawns, grazing just across the creek. They appeared relaxed, as if they’d been doing that there for years.

We left and toured around the area and that night we met our friends, Barry and Paula, at Gunthers Restaurant in Comfort, which was an easy walk from Meyers. Gunthers has the best Wienersnitzel in the area, even better than some of the German restaurants in Fredericksburg. Later, Barry entertained us by singing a few songs and playing his guitar. Barry knows some really old cowboy songs, such as those made famous by Jimmy Rodgers.

That’s the experience with Meyers Bed and Breakfast (www.meyerbedandbreakfast.com).   We had a great time….can’t wait to go back.

The Puu Poa Condos in Kauai Hawaii the Garden Isle

Scientists say that there’s a new island forming, from an underwater volcano near Hawaii. It will probably take a few thousand years to break the surface, but when it does, mother nature is going to have a hard time trying to surpass her masterpiece….Kauai. The Garden Isle is her nick name, and the garden they must be referring to, is Eden.

Kauai has to be one of the most beautiful islands in the world. I have only been to a few islands, and I have to admit it would be very hard for any other place to touch me the way she does.

Island Kauai, Na Pali Coast

Kauai Mountain Cliffs - Courtesy Wikipedia

Run our own business, we needed a vacation desperately.

A best friend had just came back from Kauai, and could not stop talking about it. She stayed at a condo in Princeville at Hanalai on the North side of the island.

We tried to book the condo for the following week, but they were booked solid.

The lady at the rental office was very apologetic and said if they get a cancellation that she would call us. The Hawaiian gods must have been looking out for us, because a few hours later, we were told that there was a cancellation and a beautiful condo was available.

The unit we stayed in was in a very unique building. Most of the buildings were done in dark brown siding and dark trim, ours stood out with it’s white stucco and a light blue trim. The front stairs were surrounded by glass that ran from the ground floor to the top of the second floor.

Inside there is a short walkway that leads to a beautiful entrance door of glass and copper, covered with a green patina, matching the shades of all the plants surrounding the building. The doors open to a lanai with a view of the ocean, and thru the living room, the balcony also has a ocean view perfect for watching sail boats and sun sets. The condo has a very welcoming feel, with a soft floral pattern on the living room couches, and gentle pink curtains. The dining room was raised up a step giving the sense of it being separate and open at the same time. Past the dining area is the kitchen, done in white Formica and brown wood trim. To the right of the kitchen is a very large master bedroom with a closet that runs the length of the wall. The large master bath has a Japanese soaking tub near the wall covered with gold and brown mosaic tile.

Down the hall is a another bath and a smaller bedroom with a view of the garden surrounding the building.

The town of Hanalei is just a short drive from Princeville and has a very local and friendly feel. Gift shops, art galleries and restaurants are all in the center of town. If you never tried it, you should try the shave ice. All the flavors are terrific, just make sure that you order it with ice cream at the bottom.

A few miles past the center on town is the residential section and a covered pier, where the locals swim and enjoy the sunset. It is a little scary to watch how the kids will climb on the roof and jump off, I guess they’ve must have been doing it for years.

It’s very hard to describe all the beautiful places in Kauai but on the wall of our lanai was a sign to set the mood, it read: Sun, Surf, Drinks on ice, Living in Paradise.

The price runs about $225 a night and I would have gladly paid more.

Brownstone Townhouse in Manhattan, New York

Stay The Night Bed and Breakfast

This beautifully renovated brownstone townhouse, with its prime location between 5th and Madison Avenues in the best neighborhood in Manhattan, is absolutely hands down my favorite place to stay in the area for the price. This isn’t a traditional B&B situation, which can sometimes seem to force socializing with strangers over stale donuts and corny group activities in the lobby. This luxurious townhouse is ideal for people who want their privacy, as well as for those traveling in groups. If you want a real home away from home experience that a hotel just won’t provide, this is the place to stay. All the convenience of staying in a fancy hotel is provided (including microwaves, mini-refrigerators, and maid service), but for a much lower price and with much more for your money, especially for this great location. Near Fifth Avenue shopping, the major museums, and right on Central Park, the tree lined block is peacefully quiet and absolutely safe.

Scenic View of Central Park NY - Image via Wikipedia

The townhouse offers a choice of three spacious Victorian suites, a separate one bedroom apartment with a full kitchen and two queen size beds, or smaller guest rooms with shared bathrooms (ideal for singles on a budget). The suites, decorated with antique furniture and plush carpeting, have either a two-person Jacuzzi or large cast iron tubs, two queen or twin beds, and can possibly accommodate a third person with a roll away bed (depending on which suite you stay in). The architecture is simply stunning, with high ceilings, big arched windows, and antique moldings. The apartment, which is on the fourth floor, has skylights. The views are lovely and look out on cozy gardens or charming 93rd Street, depending on which accommodation you choose.

This property attracts visitors from all over the world. During my stay there, I met a woman visiting from Warwickshire, a couple from San Francisco, and a business traveler from Toronto. I recommend booking in advance, as there is often a waiting list. They require an upfront 20% deposit, which is refundable if you cancel within a week of your planned arrival date. They are pretty accommodating about cancellations. If they can fill your spot with someone from their waiting list, they will give you back your full deposit. Rates run from $75-$155 per night in the off season. If you plan to arrive late at night (after 8:00 p.m.), plan to pay for it. After 8:00 p.m. there is a $20 charge, and after 10:00 p.m. there is a $40 charge. They don’t have a traditional hotel’s front desk or check-in system, so they have to hire someone to greet late-night arrivals. After you have received your key, you may come and go as you please for the rest of your stay. Smoking is not allowed, and neither are pets.

The Barn at Langley on Whidbey Island, WA

March isn’t the best time of year to vacation in the Seattle area (you’re more likely to avoid the infamous rain if you plan trips for the summer), but I enjoyed the weekend I spent up in Langley, WA. It’s a small town (population barely over 1,000) overlooking Puget Sound on the southern end of Whidbey Island.

Sailing yachts in Puget Sound, Washington, USA

Puget Sound Image via Wikipedia

Langley is only about ten minutes from the ferry that crosses from the island to Mukilteo (a suburb north of Seattle and slightly south of Everett), so it’s not very far out of the city if you’re in Seattle for business (or live there and just want an escape). Yet the southern end of Whidbey has a delightfully rural feel with many old barns still dotting the landscape. In fact, the vacation rental I stayed at was converted from a barn.

I found the “Barn at Langley” through a vacation rentals site that lists rentals by state and town. I had been browsing when I came across this description of a renovated barn. If you’ve ever seen the HGTV show “Rezoned,” you’ve probably seen homes converted from old public buildings (libraries, fire stations, schools, etc.) and farm buildings (silos, barns, and the like). I’ve always been drawn to the converted barns because I love high ceilings and big open living areas. Needless to say, when I saw a vacation rental born from an old barn, I decided to sign up.

Since this is the off season, it was no trouble getting a weekend (even though I was only making a reservation a week or two out). Prices were a little lower, too, than they are in the summer. Since I was going to be in the Seattle area ahead of time, I drove out to Ballard and picked up the key from the owners the night before. (They’ll also arrange to meet you at the rental, if you’re coming from out of town or can’t pick up the key ahead of time.)

The drive and ferry ride were uneventful (the directions they provided made it easy to find the place). As mentioned, I was impressed by how close it was to the city.

The vacation rental is tucked into a little residential area a couple of blocks up from downtown (such as downtown is in a city of 1,000). Langley sports a stretch of waterfront and two streets with a grocery store, a few restaurants, and several artsy shops–this isn’t a big town. I did get a kick out of the puppet shop though as it was a bit different than the ubiquitous glass, soap, clothing, and candle shops one finds in small tourist towns. Whether you want to shop or eat or get a drink at the pup, everything is conveniently located within a short walk from the home.

But let’s talk about the rental itself. This is why I chose Langley after all. In short, the architecture is cool and I really enjoyed just kicking around the house in the evenings.

It wasn’t a huge barn, and they obviously added onto it during the remodel, but from inside the kitchen/dining/living room, you can definitely tell it was a barn. It has high ceilings that slant upward, coming together in kind of a cupola (where’s my dictionary of barnology when I need it?) with lots of high windows that bring in plenty of light. A big support beam runs across, giving an authentic feel. The Nerf basketball hoop mounted on the beam is a nice touch for the kids (and, okay, I shot a few hoops too).

The remodeling/renovation seems to be quite recent. There are beautiful new hardwood floors and a stylish kitchen with concrete countertops, stainless steel appliances, and open cabinets where the dishes are on display (makes finding what you’re looking for easy). There’s a gas fireplace against the wall under the stairs leading to the loft, so you can stay cozy while you cook and hang out (it does take a while to heat the great room area due to those high ceilings, but the bedrooms have their own baseboard heaters).

Speaking of bedrooms, the home has two. The downstairs one has bunkbeds and a fold-out couch, as well as a TV and DVD player with a few movies. The master bedroom is upstairs in the loft and features a walk-in closet and private bathroom. You could sleep six in the rental without any trouble (seven if someone wants the daybed style couch in the living room). The master bedroom also has a balcony with a table and two chairs. From this pleasant perch, you can see a bit of the water (Puget Sound).

The recent remodeling shows in the bathrooms as well; there are handsome pedestal sinks and the downstairs bathroom has a large free-standing bathtub with an old-fashioned shower set up (everything is obviously new, but it looks like it comes from a different time period).

Outside lies a nicely landscaped yard and patio with plenty of room for hanging out (there’s a table for outdoor dining) or for the kids to play (I found a Frisbee lurking in a corner by the fence). There’s a barbecue in a storage area if you’d like to grill a meal (but there are plenty of restaurants in town to pick from too).

So overall this vacation rental was quite pleasant to stay in. There’s no phone or Internet though, so you probably won’t want to make this a working vacation. Bring a book, take a hike, watch the whales, and come to relax.

Prices are $170 a night during the off season and $225 a night during the summer.

The game room is equipped with all kinds of fun activities for the whole family, including air hockey, foosball, darts, card table and board games. They also offer a great library of books and magazines, satellite television and movies on a flat-screen television with surround sound. There is something for everyone.

If you want to enjoy the luxury of having home cooked meals prepared for you, you can make a request in advance with their very talented Chef Candelario. His meals are prepared with organic vegetables from the house’s gardens. The atmosphere is very friendly and warm, and the entire experience is very private and relaxing. I am not a huge fan of B&B’s or Inns, and I rarely frequent them, but this place really stands out. It’s a great place to bring your kids for the perfect combination of a down-to-earth experience mixed with little luxuries that leave you feeling well taken care of.

The owners are very environmentally conscious, and they work very hard to keep things ego-friendly. They have future plans to have solar panels installed as an alternative energy source to power their natural spring well, which is the house’s main water source. They also plan to expand their land into a fully functional farm, complete with horses and a petting zoo. If you are a nature lover, you couldn’t ask for a more beautiful place to stay. I could have spent a week roaming their five acres of land, watching the wildlife and staring in amazement at their tall tall trees.

Easy access to Interstate 5 provides for easy access to nearby casinos and shops, as well as many outdoor activities such as skiing, kayaking, horseback riding, golfing, boating, whale watching and fishing. British Columbia, Canada is also near by.

Children are welcome, although anyone under the age of 18 must be supervised in the swimming pool or hot tub. Pets are allowed, subject to prior approval and a cleaning fee. Smoking is not allowed. Prices per night range from $139 – $189. A week’s stay runs from around $900 – $1,300. Reservations are guaranteed with a $150 advance deposit. Deposit is refundable unless you cancel within 72 hours of arrival date.
